Chapter Meeting Report
Report Overview
In this meeting, we focused on introducing the students to the concepts of generative AI and prompt engineering. We began the workshop by discussing the concept of generative AI in general, including how these types of AI tools can create text, images, ideas, and other types of content. Furthermore, we discussed how these AI tools do not "think" in the same way that humans think, but instead have massive amounts of data "trained" into the AI software, allowing for each tool to "understand" and create content based upon that data. Beyond introducing the students to the general concept of generative AI, we focused on teaching students about the importance of prompt engineering. During this portion of the workshop, we introduced the students to the idea that the quality of the prompt to the AI software can have a significant impact upon the quality of the answer that the AI creates in response to that prompt. Thus, we taught students how to create more specific prompts to elicit better responses from the AI software. Following this lecture, students began to experiment with creating different prompts and revising those prompts to improve the responses that were generated by the AI software. Overall, this workshop established a foundation for the future workshops. Following this workshop, students are now more familiar with the software, and its functions. Thus, future workshops will incorporate topics like responsible AI software use, AI applications in the real world, machine learning concepts for beginners, and AI projects.
