Meeting Summary

Today was this online chapter's very first meeting, where I introduced the basics of AI and machine learning in a way that was easy to understand for younger students! The session started with a brief explanation of what AI is and why it is becoming important for students interested in STEM. We covered a lot of examples of AI that the students have likely used in their lives, such as search engines, and face recognition. The discussion also covered what AI is not, clearing up a student's misconception by explaining that AI is based on data and patterns and does not think or act like a human. Machine learning was then introduced as a part of AI that allows systems to learn from data. A simple example of spam email detection was used to explain how machine learning works. Following this, I introduced the three main types of machine learning, supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning, concepts that will be expanded on in future lessons. The meeting ended with a short conversation about how AI is used in areas like healthcare, environmental science, and education, followed by a Q&A session. I think this meeting was extremely successful and insightful for the students in attendance!
